The creative way to give new life to an old desk

We are coming down to the business end of my DIY: Office Space Makeover Series, and with one week left to the final reveal, I am excited to share with you something truly beautiful – my new/old desk.

This office desk was actually given to my husband and I when we first moved into our home. You remember how it is, people offer you furniture left, right and centre to help you get set-up – especially your family! So this old black desk made its way into our home. For starters, modern black furniture really isn’t my style but it was a working desk in good condition, so I was not going to throw it in the trash for no reason. However, I never loved it and had many moments of thinking what I could do with it. There was no good real reason to buy another office desk but I wanted to find a budget friendly way to give it a make-over.

Firstly, I thought about painting it white, like everyone is doing at the moment, but even that didn’t really seem like my personal style. In my creative space, I really love to surround myself with lots of inspiring textures and colours … and a white office isn’t for me. That was when I thought about recovering it. THIS was an idea that I could get on board with! And, of course, onto eBay I went in search of some vinyl laminate. There were so many options to choose from, but with this particular Dc-Fix Vintage “Baroque” Black & White Self Adhesive with gorgeous black and white motif, I knew I was onto something.

The Dc-Fix Vintage “Baroque” Black & White Self Adhesive was so easy to apply. There were no bubbles or wrinkles and it just went on so smoothly. Because of the special technology you actually have up to one hour to remove the laminate before it completely glues, allowing heaps of time to get it PERFECT!

Look at the end result! Doesn’t it give a new life to an old desk? The colours work beautifully and with the bold colours I have used in my ‘How to create a cushion out of your favourite t-shirt’ and ‘How to make a pin board from an old frame’, the whole office space is really coming together.

It was so super easy – much easier than getting involved with sanding and painting.

We’re about to redecorate our living room and the furniture doesn’t fit with my colour scheme, so recovering it is my plan as well! Good for the environment, great for my bank balance!
