13 Unique ideas for a Stunning Wedding Day

13 Unique ideas for a Stunning Wedding Day - Wedding day tips and ideas to make your special day perfect - yet unique!

I am at that stage in my life when all my friends are getting married, Nick and I got married in September and I feel everyone around me is starting to win the last seat in the game of musical chairs. Every wedding I have been to has been magical for the couple involved, they all reflected something special about the couple, and their own personal touches were beautiful. I actually went to two weddings at the same venue, yet each was as individual as the other. So today I wanted to put together a list of ways to make your wedding unique, and personal to you by adding those special touches that make for a stunning wedding day. 13 is my Mother’s lucky number, so enjoy these ’13 Unique ideas for a Stunning Wedding Day’.

1/ No photos at the wedding ceremony, except by the professional

iPhone, iPad, Samsung, no matter what phone you have it comes connected to social media, games, music, movie and comes with its own portable camera. In short it is a massive distraction. Have you ever been to a wedding with the Mother of the Groom holding up her massive iPad to take photos from the front row? It’s never classy!  Say NO to cameras/iphones at your wedding ceremony and let everyone embrace the beautiful moment between the happy couple… Let them take in every word and share with you this special moment.

2/ Solid Coloured Bridesmaid Bouquets

I did this at my wedding, my bridesmaid had babies breathe only and once you move to the next point you will see why this can work so amazingly well. And also, not to get bridezilla on everyone, but it is your special day so shouldn’t your flowers stand out from the crowd?

3/ Floral or Patterned Bridesmaid Dresses

When I was planning my wedding it was so EASY to be pulled into the “norm”, what everyone else does or wears but I had this moment of “Why do my bridesmaids have to wear a floor length solid colour, that flatters no one”? Enter the floral bridesmaid dress, classic cut and vintage vibe.

4/ Break the rules – Who says flower girls have an age limit or your Father-in-Law cannot be the Best Man

My Dad obviously had a special part in our wedding day, he walked me down the aisle, we had our first dance, he made a beautiful speech – the father of the bride is an important figure on the day. So when we went to a friends wedding and he had his father as is best man, it was just BEAUTIFUL and really pulled the heart strings. And also on that note, why can’t your grandmothers be the flower girls or grandfather the ring bearer. Look outside the norms, and do things a bit differently – It is FUN!

5/ No head table, so everyone can sit together

On our wedding day we had the traditional long head table for the wedding party, which left some partners sitting alone should their other half be in the wedding party. Another wedding we went to changed all this, when they sat at a round table like everyone else and had all the partners together – Loved it!

6/ Don’t have a photobooth

Again, this used to be unique but now every wedding has one now and it is getting old. I went to a wedding that had a professional photographer set up a “studio” to take the photos of guests, it was a far more elegant sight then the photobooth box sitting in the corner. We almost booked Instathat, which printed every photo your guest send to a particular #hashtag from a delicate little vintage box (again taking up no space). I guess with this one it is just about mixing it up, and making it what you want.

7/ Simple and Clever Favour Ideas

I don’t know about you, could have been my organising stress setting in, but the favours were important for me. I wanted something special, unique but useful … so we gave people a snack. Our favours were a hit and people loved them, but at the end of the night about a third were still left behind. The last wedding we went to just had a single heart shaped chocolate! Perfect, simple, no stress and I thought a beautiful idea. Because at the end of the day, the personalised key rings, or bottle openers really aren’t useful for anyone, nor is a mason jar. People don’t need items to remember a special day, they have memories for that.

8/ Have an awesome theme

Everyone thought for sure we would have a Harry Potter wedding, after our Harry Potter proposal but we surprised them all. We instead had a vintage tea and books themed wedding which suited us perfectly. It is all about making the day special for you and a theme really helped bring everything together and made all decisions and ideas much easier.

9/ Personalised Guestbook

A beautiful friend of ours actually gifted us with a gorgeous painting of a tree with branches and the guests put their thumbprints on to make the leaves (and signed their names). We still have it hanging in our room, as it is colourful and a gorgeous memory from the day. Love this and want something similar, click here.

10/ No children at the Ceremony or Reception

Controversial I know but what will a 5, 8 or 3 year really take away from the special day? I don’t have kids, my friends don’t have kids and my cousins don’t have kids so it was an easy call for me to have a Kid-Free Wedding. There is something very relaxed about the day knowing a 2-year-old isn’t going to try and burn his fingers on the candles or try to hit the wedding cake with his sword during speeches (and yes I have witnessed both).

11/ Pin something sentimental on your bouquet

Unfortunately all my grandparents have since passed on and were not present at my wedding, however I wanted a piece of them there with me. I had a gorgeous family broach on my bouquet of my grandmother, and I wore the family heirloom watch which was her mothers before her. My mother-in-law even gifted me a embroidered handkerchief that her late mother had made, which I carried in my purse. These special items made sure my family was with me on the day. My ultimate gesture on the day was to my grandfather, I chose to keep my last name in his honour.

12/ Make the speeches about the couple,  not what job they have or uni degrees

Speeches! Such a simple thing to come from the heart but so many get it wrong. No offence to anyone but I don’t need to know what your 7th-grade teacher said about your personality or that you excellent at University. I am at this wedding to see the union of two people in love, let us just focus on that. Make the wedding speeches personal, make them from the heart, and thank those who have made the day possible. My romantic husband actually read his speech to music and had learnt every word of by heart and timed every pause to the cords of the song… people are still talking about it today because it was unique and special.

13/ Have FUN …

This day is about YOU! Make it everything YOU want it to be. Throw away all the rules, and have the day that is personal to you and your husband.

I hope these 13 Unique ideas for a Stunning Wedding Day have been of inspiration – Happy wedding planning!

    1. Thanks Ambi! I hope you got some great tips for your friend… Weddings can get stressful to plan, so just being there for her is the best thing a friend can do. 🙂

  2. These are great ideas! We’re following the same route with party favors. Since our ceremony and reception locations are 1 hour apart, we’re making snacks for the party favors! Hopefully they will hold the guests over until dinner time.

    1. Such a great idea Emily! I know I am the same when at a wedding, and I am getting peckish before the meal arrives. I think it will be a hit with your guests and CONGRATULATIONS!!

    1. My father in law actually made the book arch for us. It has a steal frame and LOTS of vintage books, so was a mission to set up but was perfect for the day 🙂

  3. The vintage book themed wedding is the cutest! Love all the ideas you have here but the floral bridesmaids dress and no photos except by the professional takes home the prize for me, I think that is a great unorthodox way of doing it and totally spices up the occasion.

    1. I think its so easy to get caught up in the norm with planning a wedding, but its important to stay true to yourself. I loved my bridesmaid dresses!!

    1. Thanks Erlene! I loved that idea too, the head table did make me feel kinda awkward like I was on show… I would have loved to have hidden away on a round table, although I guess it is your BIG day!! LOL

  4. These are really interesting tips. I agree that ipads are obnoxious but I don’t mind cell phone photos because I think it’s really neat to be able to experience the special day from multiple perspectives. I understand people without kids don’t always enjoy kids, but typically weddings are one of the few times for families to gather together and I think the kids belong in the pictures and the memories 🙂

    1. I can totally understand Lindsay, I guess the decision was easier for us as most friends and family didn’t have younger kids. Weddings are a personal day for the person involved, and should do what makes them happy in the end. <3

  5. I love these ideas! Wedding season is such a special time, and these are great ideas to set one apart from the crowd!
